I think these are very valid reasons. I often have to take breaks from reading YA contemporary because the themes get repetitive. A lot of the characters and situations in those books feel very similar.

Found myself continually nodding as I read this post. I’ve read some YA and liked several series a lot. But your point absolutely nail the reasons why I don’t read more YA.

Same! I have had lots of trouble with YA contemporaries in the past. I can only really read them if I’m really in the mood for them and that doesn’t happen often.

This is SOOO SO true! The more I think about it, the more I dislike YA contemporary. I honestly read like maybe 4 contemps back in the summer and I disliked them all. I thought I just wasn’t feeling them, but I discovered that I’m just outgrowing them and they don’t interest me as much anymore. I find myself leaning more towards fantasy even though I always feared this genre. I now read mental illness books because I find them to be interesting and books that feature something untalked about or something different. Other than a tacky romance and highschool drama hahaha

Great post! I honestly loved that someone else was going through the same thing that I was going through 🙂
