Are love triangles necessary?
Are they really necessary when the world needs saving? When the kingdom is falling apart? When the plot should have zero room for romance?
Sure, a lot of people seem to like these confusing, irritating love triangles (sometimes they’re not even triangles and instead are just…messy). Otherwise, why would so many books include them? I wish I knew.
I can never understand how MCs can have the ‘love’ of so many at once. Unless you’re super pretty and have a warm, outgoing personality..it’s really unlikely to happen. Even then, I doubt it’s true love.
Love triangles can sometimes ruin an otherwise excellent series. I don’t know how many times I’ve hated the choice a character makes concerning their love life. I hate the attitude a lot of male leads have (possessiveness, written to not look as bad as other guys without actually being necessarily good themselves—or the flip-flop of personalities with each new book).
Take Snow Like Ashes for example. I really loved the first book. It had an interesting plot, but then the love triangle ruined it. I still refuse to touch the last book. I also had similar issues with The Grisha trilogy. I despised the ending so much (and I almost didn’t read Six of Crows because of my bitterness).
But are they really necessary to the plot? In some cases, they might be. In most, in which books have a more serious, world-could-end-as-we-know-it plot, no. Just spare us–or at least me. I feel like at this point it’s just filler. Not everyone needs two love interests. And not everyone needs one. Instead of one girl and two guys (or more) on a journey or hanging out, can’t we have more girls actually existing (other than the mean girl/evil queen/airheaded mom/absentee friend) around the MC?
Don’t get me wrong. I do like romances here and there, but when I’m promised a fantastic fantasy—I don’t want a typical love triangle soap opera drama with some plot sprinkled in between.
Sometimes love triangles are fine and are, in fact, a part of the plot. And other times, they exist for ??? !!! ???
Personally, I hope for more asexual heroines.
What do you guys think?
